Day 46: Death Valley
Venice Beach morning run
As I knew that we will spend most of the day in the car, a morning run along the beach was the perfect start into the day. It was really foggy and as nicole was taking a walk, I have a great picture of the morning mood.
Death Valley
Our trip today took us from Los Angeles to Mammoth Lakes, even though Death Valley isn’t directly on the route, we decided to do the detour. Our first stop was at the Whole Foods market, which we definitely prefer over Walmart. They are more expensive but have a better choice of products and they have real and fresh bread!
Then our next main stop was already Death Valley, we did multiple short stops and had a really bad traffic jam right in front of Baker which took nearly an hour.
Beside of that the driving was rather uneventful. It got hotter and hotter and the landscape became more rural the further we drove.
In Death Valley we did only some quick stops, as we reached Badwater Basin, we had 52 degrees! 🔥 it‘s also the lowest point of North America with -85.5 meters below sea level.
We saw multiple test cars and Erlkönige, which makes sense if you want to test the cars in extrem heat.
A quick stop at Panamint Springs was used to eat a quick dinner (we shared a salad + fries).
Then we were on our way to Mammoth Lakes, which was still around 3 hours away 😱
Night was quickly approaching which provided sone amazing light and gave a special touch to the desert.
Then we finally made it to the campground, at first r we look for a checkin but had to realize that it was probably closed. So we just went to the side and it was labeled with my name (Stmad 🤷🏻♂️)
Thanks to our practice the tent was up in no time and now im writing this quick post. It’s amazing how beautiful the night sky is here. My iPhone can capture it with the night mode, but it doesn’t do the real experience any justice.
Driving statistic
It took us 10:51h and 540 miles or 869 km to go from Los Angeles to Mammoth Lakes through Death Valley.
