Day 61: Maui - Sun & Beach

Good Morning Maui

We slept good and woke up around 07:40, which would convert to 10:40 Vancouver time, so it seems that we are not affected by any jet lag. Then it was time for my first outdoor run in a long time, Nicole joined me as well. Our host gave us some tips for the best way to reach the beach way.

The first stretch consisted of water front running along the highway, so one side was beautiful, the other not so much ;-) Then after ~3 km we reached the beachwalk, which runs in front of all the various hotels here. They are apparently forced to provide this public accessible walkway, which is a good thing from my point of view. It’s the same with the parking, they always have to provide public parking to allow all people to enjoy the beach, not only the hotel guests.

After our ~8.5km run, we did a cool of in the pool, the sun was already burning and with the high humidity it felt pretty hot.

We were then amazed how generous our guesthouse owners are with the stuff they provide. Beside of snorkeling equipment we also got beach chairs & umbrella which we can keep for the 6 nights we stay here, for free.

After we were equipped, we did a short stop at the Safeway to get some groceries. On day 61, it happened that we were shocked how expensive everything is here… If you ever thought that Switzerland is crazy, check out Hawaii :)

I’m still not sure what felt the most brutal, 5$ smoothie, 8$ hummus? But sure, everything has to be shipped to here, I see that. Local products can be quite cheap on the other hand, we spotted 1.50$ fresh Pineapples.

After we survived the shopping shock, we went to Baby beach which was close by. It’s perfect to get into (or back into) snorkeling, as the water is really shallow and you can always stand. But there were a lot of fishes and we even saw a turtle! It was amazing and it was a lot of fun to glide through the water and see all this beauty.

Second beach for the day was then Airport Beach, which isn’t close to the airport as the name could suggest, but there was a airport next to it until 1986. It was a bit more crowded as Baby Beach, but not too bad. The snorkeling was here level 2, it was pretty soon pretty steep but this allowed for easier swimming without the fear of touching anything.

The weather was interesting, it was sometimes cloudy but most of it sticked to the volcano, we even had some really light rain.

After we had enough of the beach and the sun, we did another quick stop at Safeway to grab some beer & granola bars and then made it back to the guesthouse.

A refreshing shower later we went for Dinner to Māla Tavern, which was great food right next to the ocean! We timed it perfectly to be right on time back for the sunset at the guesthouse.

Soon it’s time for sleep as we have to get up around 03:00 to be on time for the Sunrise at Haleakala Summit.
