Day 80: Kaua'i - Helicopter
Helicopter
Initially we decided to do our helicopter flight on Kauai (Because there is roughly 70% of the land which is not accessible, so it can be only seen from the air) and on our last day of the trip. Reason for the second was that we then recognize parts of it during the flight, as we have already went there.
There are a lot of different companies that offer tours, we choose Mauna Loa. As we wanted a small helicopter, where we both have a direct view. Also they offered the “doors off” option, for which we went.
After a quick check-in at their office, we went to the airport where we got greeted by our pilot.
We were both a bit nervous as it our first flight, Nicole more because she sometimes get a bit motion sick and I because of my fear of height.
It didn’t take long and we got another short instruction from the pilot and then off we went. The first moment feels so strange, because there is no push forward (as in a plane), but you just start to float.
But it was so fun and our nervosity was gone! It was so amazing to see beautiful Kaua’i from above, a perspective that you normally never have.
In total we were close to 1 hour in the air and time just flew by, it felt like it started and was already over. Even though it’s expensive, for us it was definitely worth it.
Secret Beach
We went back to the apartment to recover a bit from the excitement ;-) Then we first went to the Kilauea Lighthouse, which we only visited from the Viewpoint.
Then after that it was secret beach, which requires a short and steep hike to get to. But was more than worth it, large and nearly empty.
We just relaxed there for ~2 hours and felt a bit the sadness of the nearing end of our trip… Just 3 more days, Friday 07:00 we are already flying home.
On the beach there was also a small pool that got sometimes filled up by the huge waves. We tried to drain it back into the ocean, but didn’t fully managed to do so ;-)
Last night
On the way back we stopped quickly to get some groceries for dinner. And then a bit later went for a sunset walk along the shore.
