Day 7: Medellín

Medellín

A quick run in the morning showed me how empty it was yesterday!

Then, we had breakfast at the hotel and did laundry (or, more precisely, we dropped the laundry off). After that, we went onto the Comuna 13 tour.

Comuna 13

It was one of the most dangerous districts of Medellín, occupied and controlled by various guerrilla organizations. It was also used to hire police killers and new gang members.

In 2002, significant efforts were made to get the area out of the hands of the guerrillas, and two big operations were carried out. They were controversially received because there was a high amount of causalities. But it was the trigger to change in the area. Followed by better public access through the metro, gondolas, and staircases. Which made access to the area way more manageable, and tourism started to follow.

Today, it’s one of the most, if not the most, visited places in Medellín. So it was to expect the tour to be pretty touristy, which was true.

But still, it was impressive to see this place, which just 20 years ago was utterly impossible to access as a tourist.

Many graffiti art was to be seen, and multiple dance groups performed.
